A Psychoanalytic Comment on Pirandello¡¯s [Six Characters in Search of an Author]
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
Luigi Pirandello¡¯s play [Six Characters in Search of an Author] is very suggestive and impressive in terms of analytic setting. It is well known that free associations on the couch resemble a kind of the secret psychodrama that plays out on the stage of the inner mind. The patient lying on the stage verbally acts out his or her own neurotic drama with his or her own life history, and mobilizes many characters to the stage of his or her mind. The main characters on the inner stage are the patient¡¯s parents, siblings, friends, colleagues, or neighbors. From a structural point of view, there are six components of the patient¡¯s drama£ºthe patient¡¯s ego, id, superego, and the analyst¡¯s ego, id, superego. I believe that psychoanalysis is a closed drama, Moreno¡¯s psychodramaisan open drama, and Pirandello¡¯s drama is an absurd drama. I guess that Pirandello¡¯s life was very unhappy and chaotic. Even though he won a Nobel prize in 1934, he was a fascist writer fully supported by Mussolini. Study of his life history reveals that he had unresolved pre-oedipal and oedipal conflicts, and that he was very cynical, melancholic, obsessive, and confused. The six characters in his famous play symbolize his own family dynamics, which included that is the incest, his father¡¯s immorality, his ideal mother, and the use of many innocent children as scapegoats and so on. Furthermore, his marital life was also tragic due to his wife¡¯s paranoid conditions. He suffered from her psychotic symptoms for 15 years. As a result, Pirandello escaped from the danger of insanity and chaos in his life to the new order of fascism, however, his choice was only another mistake in his life.
